God the Creator

The Bible opens with God describing His creation of the heaven and the earth

[1]. The rest of the Bible emphasises His supreme position as the Creator and Sustainer of the universe [2].

While the Bible does not specifically state that there had been previous creations before the present one, there are a few indications in the Bible that there may have been at least one. That creation, or the worldwide flood described in the Bible, may have given rise to such recent discoveries as ancient fossils.

The Bible does not attempt to be a scientific textbook, but it does make clear that God is from everlasting to everlasting, all-powerful and all-wise, a living God who takes care of, and delights in, all that He has made.

Jesus and the apostles believed the Genesis Creation account

Every major detail of the Genesis Creation is confirmed by the preaching of Jesus and the apostles in the New Testament:

  • The seven days of Creation [3]
  • The creation of Adam and Eve [4]
  • Adam made in the Creator’s image [5]
  • Adam made from the dust of the earth [6]
  • Adam first formed, then Eve [7]

Christians cannot believe some things in the Bible but reject others, such as Creation, authenticated by Jesus.

Adam was created about 6,000 years ago

The Bible records the ages of the men living before and after the Flood [8]. If you add to that the 430 years of Exodus 12:40, the 480 years of 1 Kings 6:1, and the lengths of the reigns of the kings of Israel and Judah, you can calculate how long ago Adam and Eve were created. So, according to the Bible, we are now living about 6,000 years after the Creation of Adam and Eve.

How old is the universe?

The Bible does not give a clear answer to this question.

  • Some believe the heaven and earth to be very old and already in existence when the Creation of life began. In this view the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters 6,000 years ago to fit the earth for the living organisms that currently live in it.
  • Others believe that the entire universe was created in six days, and that the universe, including the earth, is therefore young, only 6,000 years old.

Both views have evidence to support them.

Creation, not evolution

Great scientists such as Isaac Newton, Michael Faraday and Ernst Chain believed the Genesis account and worshipped the Creator. The theory of evolution, however, introduces a denial of God as the Creator of life.

There are also many scientific objections to evolution.

The powerful witness of the Creation to its Maker

The Bible points out the greatness and complexity of Creation as a witness to the power and wisdom of God, in contrast to the weakness of man [9].

Even in its present cursed condition, Creation silently witnesses to God’s power and wisdom, His love of variety and His great generosity. Powerful microscopes, telescopes and other techniques now show even more of the Creator’s handiwork than ever before.

The spiritual creation

The natural creation foreshadows God’s spiritual creation. which takes place over a period of 7,000 years. The Bible describes a ‘sabbath rest’ [10], which lasts for the final thousand years of this 7,000-year period [11]. It is called by Isaiah and Peter “new heavens and a new earth” [12]. God’s faithful servants undergo renewal [13] after the pattern of the man Jesus Christ, who is called the first-born of this new creation [14].

This new creation will ultimately bring pleasure and glory to the great Creator.
